Sailing Lessons

We occasionally run sailing lessons for adults and teenagers on Sunday mornings from 10:00 am – 12:30 pm.

Our introduction-to-dinghy-sailing lessons are run on an as-requested basis, subject to demand, weather conditions and instructor availability.

Lessons involve onshore theory and on-the-water sailing. These are not private lessons — there may be other participants on the day — but when it comes time to sail, it will most likely be just you and an instructor in the boat.

Price per lesson, paid in advance:
$50 youth (under 18) · $100 adult.

Discounts may apply for adults who are full-time students, unemployed or retired — please enquire. If you decide to join the club, your lesson fees are deducted from your membership fees.

Hiking on an NS14

We are a small, community and family-oriented sailing club with a wide range of sailing ability. Beginners are informally coached by those with more knowledge and experience.

Our sailing lessons focus on enabling individuals and families to progress towards participating in our Sunday afternoon racing program and become full club members. The boats we sail are small (8-14 ft) open dinghies. Watch a sample race in the video below.

There are three classes of sailing dinghies at PHOSC: Bics are great for kids learning to sail; Herons are roomier and perfect for an adult's first lesson; and NS14s are faster — for those ready for more excitement.

Things to Note

  • Sailing is weather-dependent — if conditions are unsuitable, we may need to reschedule.
  • If you're unwell, please stay home. Refunds or catch-up lessons are provided where needed.
  • Life jackets are compulsory and available at the club.
  • Sunscreen is available, but bring your own if you prefer a particular brand.

  • Hat
  • Rash shirt (long-sleeved reduces sunburn)
  • Sunscreen
  • Towel
  • Swimsuit
  • Warm jacket or spray jacket (wool/fleece beats cotton)
  • Dry change of clothes
  • Old sneakers or water shoes (they'll get wet)
  • Wetsuit if you feel the cold
  • Sunglasses cord or lanyard
  • Lunch & drinks — or buy from the canteen
