SCOUTS SAILING DAY

Where: Port Hacking Open Sailing Club, 226B Attunga Rd, Yowie Bay

Overview

The committee of the Port Hacking Open Sailing Club has kindly agreed to put on a free “Discover Sailing Day” for the Grays Point / 2nd Sutherland Scout Groups. 

This will be an opportunity for the scouts to learn a bit about the theory of sailing as well as getting experience sailing a small sailing dinghy. 

The club owns a number of sailing dinghies that are suitable for children to learn in (Optis and MJs) and these will be available on the day. 

Everyone can have a turn at helming(steering) a boat.

Facilitators

Paul Armstrong (Xavier’s granddad) and other experienced sailors from PHOSC.  Parents/carers and scout leaders are also encouraged to participate (we have some bigger boats if you want a go as well- you will need to register too if you'd like to try!) 

Schedule of the day

09:30 – 10:00 – Introduction

10:00 – 11:00 – Sailing terminology and theory

11:00 – 11:30 – Rigging a boat

11:30 – 12:30 – Practical exercise 1 (steering a boat)

12:30 – 13:30 – Lunch

13:30 – 14:00 – Practical exercise 2 (capsize drill)

14:00 – 15:30 – Free sailing

15:30 – 16:00 – Pack up

Insurance

As this will be a “Discover Sailing” day, the sailing club is covered by Australian Sailing’s insurance policy which means all participants will be covered for injury and 3rd party damage. You need to register for this to be active.

Lunch

The club canteen will be open for basic snacks and drinks BUT you will need to bring your own packed lunch.

What to bring

  • Lunch/snacks
  • Drinks
  • Sun lotion,
  • swimming gear,
  • rash shirt (preferably long sleeved),
  • board shorts,
  • t-shirt,
  • closed shoes (old joggers or crocs),
  • towel,
  • dry clothes to change into when finished. 
  • If you have a life-jacket, bring your own otherwise the club has plenty you can borrow.

Safety

  1. All participants will need to register online to be eligible to attend.                     Click this link to REGISTER.
  2. When you arrive please ensure your sign on the attendance sheet and at the end of the day remember to sign off.
  3. If you are a poor swimmer (or a non-swimmer) you must inform one of the facilitators at the beginning of the day .
  4. No one is to go afloat or enter the water if the skull and crossbones flag is hoisted on the deck.  Even if the flag is not hoisted then you should not go afloat or enter the water unless one of the facilitators is present on the deck.
  5. Lifejackets must be worn at all times when on the deck and when on/in the water.
  6. A support boat will be present when the scouts are out sailing.

A Discover Sailing Day will give you the opportunity to go for a sail and have a look around your local Sailing Club.

Who should discover sailing?

A Discover Sailing Day is for anyone wanting to visit a sailing club and discover sailing for the first time.

Outcome

You will have experienced sailing and have been introduced to your local Sailing Club, who will have provided you with information on what other opportunities, courses and activities are on offer that will enable you to continue your participation in sailing.
