Child Protection

Port Hacking Open Sailing Club is committed to promoting the protection of Junior Members and ensuring that their safety, welfare and wellbeing is maintained at all times during the conduct of Club activities.

To support this policy the Club will:

  • Publicise child protection information and requirements.
  • Require all Adult Members to:
    • Complete a Volunteer/Student Declaration, as advised by the NSW Department of Sport & Recreation for sports club volunteers.
    • Support and enforce Club Rules.
  • Appoint a Child Protection Officer – for this Club it will be the Commodore.

All Adult Members of PHOSC are deemed volunteers as the Club ethos is one of participation and all Adult Members will occasionally serve in a voluntary capacity eg. trainer, support boat handler, boat launch/recovery assistant, skipper, galley person, named official and other club rostered and non-rostered activities.

All completed Volunteer/Student Declaration forms will be stored at the Club in a safe, secure location in accordance with the NSW Commission for Children and Young People’s directions.

A copy of the Volunteer/Student Declaration form can be downloaded from this website.

PHOSC management committee nominated Lesley and Ralph (aka Buzz) Skelton for the Cook Community Awards 2017 program run by HON. SCOTT MORRISON MP FEDERAL MEMBER FOR COOK , that recognises exceptional service to the community by volunteers.

Today (2/12/17) at the Cronulla Sharks Leagues Club, not only were they presented with the award by Scott Morrison, but of the forty very worthy recipients from the Cook electorate, Lesley & Buzz also won the highest award possible, the Cook Community Medal for the best representative volunteers in the Cook electorate for 2017.... what an awesome achievement!

This is also the first time in its history that the Cook Community Medal has been awarded to dual recipients!

Both Lesley and Graham are the longest standing members of PHOSC to which the club owes an enormous debt for their enduring & ongoing support of the club, its facilities and members over the last 61 years.

For those of you that weren’t aware Lesley & Buzz actually first met at the club as teenagers, carried on as boyfriend / girlfriend for a while, eventually marrying and creating a fantastic dynasty of kids and grandchildren that we have all met or sailed with at the club at one time or other. Most of the family were on hand to witness the presentation event at Sharkies and the grandkids managed to storm onto the stage for a photo opportunity with Lesley, Buzz and Scott Morrison.

Lesley gave a fantastic impromptu thankyou speech when receiving the award, and of course Buzz knowing he couldn’t out do that effort, (and knowing his place in the Skelton pecking order) just smiled and waved from back stage!

Well done & congratulations to Lesley & Buzz.
